Fab Family Photo Ideas For Every Time Of Year

From the glowing golden hour of summer afternoons to the crisp clarity of winter mornings, there’s no wrong time of year to freeze your precious moments in time.

Let’s break down each season and tips on how to capture the essence of each time of year in your family photos:

1. Choose seasonal colours

Your wardrobe is an amazing tool to enhance the essence of your chosen season. I recommend selecting warmer colours for summer and autumn, and fresh, cool colours for winter and spring. Or, if you’re looking to be a bit more striking, feel free to experiment using contrasting colours.

2. Decide on your ideal photo vibe

Each season brings its own unique photo opportunities, and I honestly can’t tell you which is my favourite! Summer opens the door to fun and energetic outdoor shoots bathed in golden light; winter allows for beautiful, crisp cityscape photos or cosy photos in your home that set the scene for capturing your children in their element; spring is all about fresh flowers peeping in amongst the foliage, so garden shoots are a great idea; and autumn lighting is always magical - with its mix of cool air and toasty colours, this season is all about the warm glow from happy smiles and crunchy leaves.

3. Set the right time

Each season has its own window of time during the day that makes for the ideal photo conditions. We’ll chat about when the lighting, temperatures and weather will be perfect for capturing the essence of the season and the natural beauty and joy of your family. For example, we definitely don’t want your little ones freezing and grumpy as we try to take photos of them on a chilly winter’s evening, so we’ll opt for a warmer time of day instead.

4. Incorporate seasonal props (if you like)

Props that tie into the story of your chosen season can be an effective way to add interest and fun to your family photoshoot. They can add fresh pops of colour or texture to your photos, or they can add to your outfit. For example, your little ones can interact with flowers during your spring garden shoot, or wear beanies and scarves for the colder months - they’ll love putting them on, which also means big bubbly smiles!

5. Don’t let the season dictate your shoot

Just because you think a specific location is better for a certain time of year, it doesn’t mean it can’t be a good spot year round. For example, not only is a beach perfect for summer shoots while you splash in the sea and play in the sand, it’s also fantastic for jerseyed hand-in-hand strolls.

Each season brings a diverse array of unique and stunning photo opportunities that allow you to let your creative juices and imagination flow! It’s such a special idea to create a seasonal collection of family photos and memories.

Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to chat about your photo ideas. I’d love to hear from you.
